For 30 years I’d been trying and failing to incorporate a meditation practice in my spiritual life. My decades long attempt at a writing career had been an utter failure and I found myself adrift emotionally and spiritually in Austin, TX. At this low ebb a good friend dragged me to his weekly meditation meeting. The teacher was a man named Guy. For an hour I followed his lessons. I came back the next week and the week after and began to practice his simple teachings on my walks, at home and in the car, and I began to change. A few weeks into attending his class I finally approached Guy and introduced myself. I got honest about, well, everything. He recommended several books, which I read to this day. The way I think and feel has changed. The way I respond to fear and anxiety has changed. The way I approach my art has changed. And accordingly my entire life has changed for the better. If you’re struggling, please give yourself the gift of a few minutes with this amazing man. He’ll ask you to take a deep breath through your nose and exhale slowly through your mouth. And sometime soon, in the space between those breaths, a miracle will happen, and your life will be transformed.
